Where I place my attention matters. It shapes what I notice, what I nurture, and how I move through my life.
Where I place my attention matters.
It does not mean that I create everything that happens to me. Life brings circumstances I did not choose, experiences I could not have prevented, and the choices of other people over which I have no control.
But within what happens, I am still participating.
What I repeatedly focus on can influence what I notice, the stories I tell myself, the choices I make, and how I experience the life I am living.
My attention is powerful.
If I spend much of my time looking for what is wrong, frightening, irritating, or missing, those things can begin to fill my field of vision. They may be real, and they may need my attention, but they are rarely the whole of what is here.
Beauty is here too.
So are love, possibility, kindness, connection, creativity, and moments I could easily miss if I am not looking.
This doesn’t mean turning away from what is difficult.
Sometimes I need to look down and watch my footing.
Sometimes there is a rock in the path that needs my attention. Sometimes I need to stop, rest, change direction, tend to something that hurts, or decide that a particular path is no longer mine to walk.
I can acknowledge what is difficult without giving it the whole landscape.
And I can notice what is beautiful without pretending the difficult thing isn’t there.
What am I giving my attention to, and how is that attention influencing the way I am walking?
Keeping life simple can help me hear the answer.
For me, simplicity is not about avoiding life or making myself smaller. It is about paying attention to what I need, noticing what works for me, and remaining aligned with my integrity.
Someone else’s urgency does not automatically become my urgency.
I can care without immediately reacting.
I can pause.
I can ask myself what is actually mine to do.
I can notice whether my response is coming from love, fear, obligation, habit, people-pleasing, or something that genuinely feels aligned.
Not everything requires an immediate answer.
Not everything requires my energy.
And not everything needs to be understood today.
Perspective often comes in retrospect.
There are experiences I understand differently now than I did while I was living them. Sometimes meaning emerges slowly. Sometimes what I learn today brings new understanding to something that happened years ago.
For this moment, being here is enough.
Trust does not require me to know where every path leads.
I can trust God, Spirit, Source, and the wisdom developing within me while still experiencing uncertainty.
“As I walk, as I walk,
The universe is walking with me.” ~Traditional Navajo Prayer
I can trust and question.
I can trust and change direction.
I can trust and admit that I don’t know.
I can trust while continuing to participate fully in my own life.
And I can become more conscious of where I place the energy of my attention.
Fear deserves my attention when it has something to tell me, but it does not have to become the lens through which I see everything.
Pain deserves tending, but it does not have to convince me that there is no beauty.
Difficulty may ask something of me, but I don’t have to seek struggle in order to grow.
I do not have to confront every fear simply because it is there.
I do not have to do the hardest thing to prove that I am brave.
And I do not have to earn ease through suffering.
Sometimes courage is moving forward.
Sometimes it is stopping.
Sometimes it is speaking.
Sometimes it is listening.
Sometimes it is doing.
Sometimes it is allowing.
Discernment helps me know the difference.
As I walk through this life, I will encounter terrain I would not have chosen.
There will be places where I need to pay close attention to my footing.
And there will also be moments when I can lift my eyes.
I can notice what is beside me.
I can look toward the horizon.
I can remember what matters.
I can notice beauty.
I can remain open to possibility.
I can remember that I am not walking alone.
I can watch my footing without forgetting to look up.
Grounding Questions
What has been receiving most of my attention lately, and how is that affecting my experience?
Is something asking for my attention right now, or am I giving it energy simply because it is loud, urgent, or familiar?
What else is here that I may not have been noticing?
Where might I look up today?
